Our electric skateboards sit alongside brick-laying robots, VR tech, Vic Hyperloop, and a multitude of apps as National iAward Winners
Last Wednesday, team BajaBoard had their work cut out for them. The road to the iAwards is a long one and we were up for the challenge. The iAwards is designed to "discover, recognise, and reward technology innovations that have the potential to, or are already having a positive impact on the community". The National iAwards invites Winners and Merit recipients from the State iAwards to compete on a national level. It's the pinnacle event, bringing together a range of industries to "showcase inspiring achievements of [Australian] home grown innovations".
After receiving a Merit in the Victorian iAwards, we were invited to participate in the Nationals. This consists of another written application with different criteria than the State Awards, and involves live presentations and judging. Teams are offered the additional chance to compete in a "PitchFest" and showcase held at KPMG, which ran the morning of the big finale. The showcase was our opportunity to network with fellow competitors and listen to a range of ideas. We were very proud to walk away as PitchFest winners from the Consumer Market Category and we immensely enjoyed our conversations with some great minds in ICT.
PitchFest done it was time to "freshen up and don [our] frocks" in the words of Rob Fitzpatrick. It was down to the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre for the Gala, and the student awards showcase. This was the shining moment where all the budding entrepreneurs (participants in the student categories) could show off their projects. One in particular that caught our eye was PowerShot, an app that accurately measures how fast you can kick, hit or throw a ball. Such great kids, and we even ended up on their table!
The iAwards went above beyond what we expected from any event. The spectacle was amazing, and nothing held back to bring to light the greatest showcase of innovation in Australia. Minister Phil Dalidakis gave an address on Australia moving forward, and the ICT industry, and Cal Wilson kept us entertained throughout the night. The evening proceeded with many selfies, lots of yummy food, and the winners and merit recipients of each category.
BajaBoard was announced as the Winner of the Consumer Market category. After having only received a merit in the state awards, we were super excited to be named National winners of this prestigious competition. Many congratulated us on our awards, and we enticed people with some of the awesome upcoming plans for our team. Stay tuned as we release more news!
